On the first Monday of October is World Day of Architecture! We just could not pass by this interesting event and prepared for you a list of the most unusual architectural projects ranging from "crooked house" in Poland to an office building in a picnic basket in the U.S..

Office Inventionland - this is something that you have never seen before. Usual business premises may look more or less strictly, depending on the occupation, but the office of a solid company will never look like a kindergarten. It turns out that there are exceptions to this rule ...

This house is a conceptual design by Milano-based designer and architect Carlo Santambrogio. These are actually pictures of a very well done artist's rendering and not a real house. Not yet anyway. The house above is part of his glass house series, and this one in particular is designed to be a "snow house." The grid structure of the house is made to be modular and can be designed into almost any configuration. In his "cliff house" design, the house is elevated over a thin sheet of water, making its occupants feel like they are floating above the cliff.

The Mexican Benito Hernandez built his home in San Jose de las Piedras northern state of Coahuila. For over 30 years, Hernandez, his wife of Santa Marta de la Cruz and their family zhvut in the grotto under the stone, which is home to the roof.

Cave House in Festus, Missouri
This modern and energy-efficient 15,000-square-foot home is built within asandstone cave in Festus, Missouri. Built by Curt and Deborah Sleeper, the home features modern interiors that blend with the natural unfinishedsandstone walls. Thanks to geothermal heating and clever design, there is no need for air conditioning or a furnace to heat/cool the home.

Selfridges Department Store, Birmingham, England


The Birmingham branch of Selfridges is a billowy mattress of a building, clad in 15,000 shimmery aluminum discs like that famous Paco Rabanne dress. It was designed by Future Systems—the name tells you pretty much everything you need to know about the firm—to be a landmark and a catalyst for the revitalization of a largely moribund city center. “An ersatz urban cliff, a giant sea anemone, a friendly, blob-like alien, the mother of all magic mushrooms,” wrote Guardian architecture critic Jonathan Glancey. “This is the department store as unalloyed architectural entertainment.”
